Bleaching

The desire of many patients to have “flawless” teeth and a brilliant smile is becoming increasingly important in dentistry. Bleaching offers a treatment method for making even strongly discolored teeth bright within a short time.

Discolorations have many different causes. Among others the consumption of coffee, certain tea varieties, soft drinks, some spices (e.g., curry, saffron, curcuma) and other foods (e.g., soy sauce, cherries, bilberries, blueberries, and strawberries) as well as smoking promote the disposition of color pigments on the teeth and their absorption in to the tooth enamel. Additional factors influencing the natural whiteness of the teeth are, among others, certain medications as well as colored toothpastes and dental rinses. Last but not least, age and personal oral hygiene have a major impact on tooth discoloration.

Unfortunately, discolorations do not disappear by carefully brushing your teeth. While superficial discolorations can be removed by a professional oral hygiene treatment in our office, only a bleaching treatment will make your teeth shine bright. In our office we offer two kinds of bleaching to our patients, in-office bleaching (whitening in the office) and home bleaching (whitening at home). Before starting with the bleaching, a professional oral hygiene treatment is recommended to create the ideal starting position for bleaching.

In-Office-Bleaching

In-office bleaching is performed in the practice. Before the treatment a comprehensive inspection of the teeth is performed, accompanied by detailed consultation. For the bleaching the bleaching agent is applied to the surfaces of the teeth and the concentration of the bleaching agent is specifically adjusted to obtain high efficiency.

The active ingredient of the bleaching agent penetrates into the tooth, where oxygen radicals are formed, which break up the dyes in the tooth, which then consequently no longer appear on the tooth surface. This “discoloring” reaction is intensified by the targeted use of blue LED-light, which has a special wavelength. Due to this, the color molecules are activated even more and can therefore show a quicker reaction with the bleaching gel.

Usually three treatment cycles are required. As a general rule the absolute treatment time (without examination and consultation) is about 45 to 50 minutes.

Home-Bleaching

For home bleaching individual trays are fabricated. The trays are filled with bleaching gel and have to be worn for four to five days for about one to two hours a day. In our office we give our patients precise instructions concerning the treatment.

Home bleaching is performed at home, but under the supervision of the dentist and therefore cannot be compared with over-the-counter bleaching products. Mostly the latter are cheaper, but clearly inferior in safety and effect duration to professional tooth whitening made by the dentist. In addition, the active ingredient (and therefore the effect) is weaker than the one used in professional bleaching.

FAQs about Bleaching

How can teeth be whitened by bleaching?

The effect differs from patient to patient and depends, among others, on the degree of discoloration of the teeth at the time of whitening and on the reaction to the treatment. In the case of home bleaching discipline is a major factor and patients have to wear the trays with the bleaching gel as discussed in the office to achieve the desired effect. As a rule, the teeth are brightened up by several shades, so that after the treatment you can enjoy a brilliant white smile.

How long will the bleaching effect last?

There are individual differences, depending, among others, on the dietary habits and personal oral hygiene of the patient. During the course of treatment we will give you cleaning instructions to maintain the bleaching effect as long as possible. If required, the treatment may be repeated after several months.

Is bleaching effective for everyone?

Tooth whitening is basically possible for all patients. Clinical studies, however, show that a very small part of the population (less than five percent) does not experience much change after bleaching.

In-office bleaching or home bleaching, which one is better for me?

This question cannot be answered in general. The best solution for the individual case depends on several factors and will be personally discussed with our bleaching specialist.

However, based on our experience a combination treatment of in-office and home bleaching is especially effective and that is why we have compiled a special combination offer for our patients, consisting of a professional oral hygiene treatment, in-office bleaching, and home bleaching.

Is bleaching damaging to the teeth?

The professional tooth whitening by the dentist is a safe method and usually the teeth are not damaged by bleaching.

Is bleaching associated with pain?

The treatment is painless, but after bleaching the teeth might be oversensitive for a few days. This is a normal reaction, which disappears after a short period of time and can be reduced by a special tooth mousse, which our patients get in the office.
